to chew should help the Cockatiel keep its beak in trim. However
in the event of an overgrown beak, an avian vet must be
consulted, as beak trimming is a delicate operation, to be done
only by an experienced professional.
You must include a couple of perches in your bird's cage.
Provide them with toys to chew on. This stimulates them
mentally. They should also be let out of their cage to fly around
the house. Just make sure that all doors and windows are shut, so
that they don't fly out. Fans and stoves should also be turned off
and no hot pots and pans should be kept open. Monitor them
continuously when they are outside their cage.

Avian Behavior
ho will train the trainer?
This question is more pertinent Wthan we realize, even if it relates
only to training birds.
There is such an abundance of information
regarding avian behavior that there is probably
more confusion than clarity. Our approach to this subject is
consequently a little different.
Our approach is a breakaway from the many quick-fix remedies
that you may be aware of. The focus here is more on what you
need to know, before you begin to teach the bird.
What is it in Cockatiel behavior that worries and sometimes even
annoys us? Some common Cockatiel behaviors that cause us
anxiety and may even get on our nerves are: feather picking,
screaming, and biting and undisciplined potty behavior.
The traditional approach to any of these problems is to look for
a cause. Sadly, even the veterinary fraternity looks for and

attributes the problem to a single cause. It's sad, because the
reason for the problem is most often not even the bird.
Frequently the problem is us.
If you thought that human behavior is complex, take a look at
avian behavior. Nothing comes even close in terms of complexity.
Often the cause and the problem will seem to have no apparent
relation. And as often most problems have more than just one
cause.
What is it to be a good Cockatiel? Don't look at the Cockatiel for
an answer. It's the one with the least knowledge about this
expectation. What is it to be a good child? A child knows. It may
not be able to express itself in crystal clear terms. But it knows.
How? Because of the child's constant contact with other humans
in its natural environment, it observes and learns to differentiate
good behavior from bad. And what it cannot learn from
observation, it is taught.
