Introduction
eather per feather the cockatiel is by far the best pet
bird. Whether as an aviary bird or a pet bird, it's the bird
the world prefers. F
They are simply beautiful. Early European travellers who first
saw cockatiels in their natural habitat compared them to nymphs
- those mythological beauties. In fact, the scientific name for this
species - Nymphicus Hollandicus - reflects this sentiment.
These birds are generally gray in color. Males have a bright
yellow head with orange cheek patches. The cheek patches of
females are lighter. Females have a row of yellow spots
underneath their wings. This is absent in males. Cockatiels are
small in size (30 - 33 cm), have a slender body and a long
pointed tail like a parrot.
Cockatiels have been bred in captivity for over a century and
there are more than a dozen mutations: pearl, pied, lutino, silver,
cinnamon, fallow, white-face and a slew of others. These look
quite different from the wild-type.
What makes cockatiels more than just aviary birds is their affable
disposition. They have a naturally calm temprament which makes
it easier to hand-feed and tame them. It is relatively easy to earn
their trust.
Cockatiels are endemic to Australia. They are found in the drier
parts of the mainland. They are not found in any other country.
Unlike most of their Pssitacine cousins, cockatiels live in open
country. These birds move about in pairs or in small flocks, near
water courses. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years,
although a few specimen have been known to live for 30 years
or more.
